CHICAGO -- Michal Handzus is every day of 37 years old and 15 seasons in the NHL. He knows hes near the end of his career. He knows hes slower than most of his Chicago teammates. He also knows how to finish a play in a big spot. Handzus scored at 2:04 of the second overtime, and the Blackhawks beat the Los Angeles Kings 5-4 in Game 5 on Wednesday night to stay alive in the Western Conference final. Brandon Saad made a nice pass to the middle, and the oldest player on the ice beat goaltender Jonathan Quick with a backhander for his second goal of the playoffs. The Slovak centre celebrated by pounding the boards behind the net as the sellout crowd of 21,871 roared. "Saad, two guys went on him and I got open," Handzus said. "I was surprised I got open like that but he waited and waited and gave me a great pass." Handzus has been all over Chicagos lines all season long as the Blackhawks searched for a second-line centre behind captain Jonathan Toews. His biggest value right now is on the penalty kill, but it was his offence that kept alive Chicagos title defence. "I want to help the team as much as I can," Handzus said. "Im playing on the PK a lot. Im not playing very well offensively. Im glad I came through." Saad had a goal and two assists to help Chicago stop a three-game losing streak. Brent Seabrook, Johnny Oduya and Ben Smith also scored, and Patrick Kane set a playoff career high with four assists. "Personally, I thought Saader was the best player on the ice tonight," Kane said. "He was bringing so much speed and puck protection." Game 6 is Friday night in Los Angeles. "We go home and we come out with a better effort," Kings defenceman Jake Muzzin said. "Weve got some experience and veterans in here who know what it takes to stop it." Marian Gaborik and Dustin Brown each had a goal and an assist, and Jarret Stoll and Tanner Pearson also scored for the Kings, who led 4-3 after two periods. It was Gaboriks NHL-best 11th playoff goal. Quick and Chicagos Corey Crawford each stopped 40 shots. Los Angeles was in position to advance to its second Stanley Cup final in three years before Smith drove to the net and swept in a rebound 1:17 into the third. Smiths third goal of the playoffs set the stage for a frantic finish as both sides pushed for the winning score. "Its not easy," Kings forward Justin Williams said. "Attaining your ultimate goal is never easy and were going to do our best to get it done." Quick made a solid stop on Marian Hossa in overtime, and the loose puck was swept away by the Kings. Los Angeles star Anze Kopitar had a chance to win it about 9 minutes into the first overtime but his shot went off the side of the net. Crawford had a kick save on Stoll in the first OT after Toews turned it over in the Blackhawks zone. "Overtime, Ive seen a lot of games, been involved in a lot of games," said Chicago coach Joel Quenneville, a former NHL defenceman. "That might have been the greatest overtime Ive seen." Back at home for Game 5 after a disastrous stay in Los Angeles, the Blackhawks put together a terrific start. But the Kings weathered the storm and then stepped up their attack in the last part of the first period. Seabrook, Oduya and Saad helped the Blackhawks to a 3-1 lead just 11:06 into the game. Chicagos second line of Saad, Andrew Shaw and Kane was a headache for Los Angeles all night long, creating numerous high-quality scoring chances. But the Kings grabbed the momentum back with a terrific sequence with 7 minutes left in the first. Quick made a great stop on Toews, and Kopitar set up Gaborik at the other end to get the Kings within one. It was reminiscent of Game 2, when Quick denied Seabrook on a 2-on-1 and the Kings went on to score six straight goals in a 6-2 victory. This time around, Brown had a nice rebound goal after Crawford made a great save on Gaborik, and Pearson made it 4-3 with a wrist shot from the right circle at 13:08 of second. Pearson deftly used Blackhawks defenceman Niklas Hjalmarsson as a screen on his fourth goal of the playoffs. Quick also had an outstanding save on Saad from inside the goal early in the second. Pearsons goal stunned the crowd, but it woke up again when Saads perfectly timed shot set up Smiths tying score. Saad had a plus-4 rating in almost 24 minutes of ice time in one of the best games of his young career. NOTES: Los Angeles police say they are investigating a battery report from a fan who says Crawford sprayed water in his face during Game 4 at Staples Center. The report alleges Crawford used a water bottle to spray the face of the heckling fan, who was thrown out of the arena and later filed the complaint with police. ... When I was out east you would face teams like them maybe every other year and a lot of the games they were on a long trip coming into our building. Its just one of the anomalies of the game. I prepare the same for any team. Every game has been close this season, its just been a matter of having that last little push at the end for us.Dorsetts goal was a special one for the former New York Ranger.Every goal is important, but it was exciting to get my first goal as a Canuck, he said. It just so happened to be the winner and shorthanded as well, which made it that much better.Luca Sbisa and Linden Vey also scored for the Canucks, who improved to 8-3-0 on a night their top line was held off the scoresheet. The Sedin line, they carried us a lot on the first few games of the year and I think we are starting to get some offensive play from all four lines now, Dorsett said. We have said since training camp that we wanted to be a four-line team. If we can do that night in and night out, it will win us a lot of games.Jordan Eberle and David Perron replied for the Oilers (4-6-1), who have lost two in a row and remain winless against Western Conference opposition this season with a record of 0-6-1.Vancouvers winning goal was scored shorthanded by Dorsett after a big giveaway by Oilers goalie Ben Scrivens, who wasnt shirking blame after the game.I made a bad play, thats about it, he said. Its unbelievably frustrating. To make a play that cost your team the game is unbelievably frustrating. You have to try not to make those.Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins said that Scrivens has been a stalwart for the team of late and doesnt deserve to be the only one feeling bad about the loss. Its the nature of the game, the nature of the beast, were all going to stand here and blame it on Ben, but how many people are going to stand up and say Holy crap, right after that he kept us in the game, he said. He made an unbelievable save, five minutes later he makes another huge save to keep us in the game. Im certainly not going to stand here and crucify the guy. Its easy to stand back and point fingers, but that kid kept us in that game and a lot of key points and was a huge part of us coming out of the hole when we hadnt won. Hell bounce back, he made a mistake, hes owned up to it. He kept us in the game with some massive saves. Im very cautious to pin the whole game on him.Edmonton started the scoring 13 minutes into the first period as a reward after sustained pressure from the opening face-off as Taylor Hall fed it to Eberle, who deked Miller before tucking in his third goal of the season on the backhand. The Canucks tied the game with just 47 seconds left in the opening frame as Chris Higgins cleared a rebound out of traffic in front to a pinching Sbisa, who beat Oilers staarter Ben Scrivens with a slap shot.dddddddddddd It was Higgins 300th career NHL point.Edmonton had a potentially disastrous play occur early in the second period as Hall crashed hard into the net, left the game with a leg injury and did not return. No update was made available after the game. Hall is the Oilerss leading scorer with 10 points. He tried to cut to the net and (Christopher Tanev) was right there, Miller said. He is a great skater as well so it was two guys who can really fly. I think Hall thought he could get an edge on him and come in and get a shot off, but Tanner was step to step with him and gave him a little push back.I think he misjudged the situation. I thought it was a pretty clean play. It wasnt a hold or a hook. Unfortunately it was a tough spot.Scrivens was able to keep it a tie game four minutes into the second, making a big kick save on Jannik Hansen on a Vancouver power play. There was a vicious hit with six minutes left in the second as Oilers captain Andrew Ference sent Zack Kassian flying with a high body check that earned him a penalty.I didnt see it live. The league might look at it, said Canucks head coach Willie Desjardins. I dont know if they will or not, well have to see what happens.Vancouver made it 2-1 with three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the third as Scrivens came across to make a big stop on Dorsett, but Vey was there to send the rebound through his legs. The Oilers, however, tied it up just over a minute later as Leon Draisaitl picked off a pass and sent it to Perron, who beat Miller up high for his first goal of the season.Edmonton came close to taking the lead on the power play four minutes into the third as Eberle had another glorious chance on the backhand, but Miller just got a piece of his stick on it to deflect it over the net. When play resumed, the Canucks went up 3-2 on a big gaffe by Scrivens, who misplayed an attempt to send the puck up ice — sending it instead to Dorsett, who put the puck between the Oiler goalies legs for a shorthanded goal. The Canucks return home to face the Nashville Predators on Sunday. Edmonton starts a five game road trip on Tuesday in Philadelphia.Notes: It was the third game of the season between the two teams, with Vancouver emerging victorious in the two previous meetings… The Canucks were without forward Alex Burrows, who began a three-game suspension for his hit to the head on Montreal defenceman Alexei Emelin on Thursday night.
